Japan could pay for part of your post-coronavirus holiday

The Japanese government could subsidise a portion of tourists’ travel expenses once the coronavirus outbreak is under control.

The $19 billion plan could start in July, according to reports in Japanese media outlets.

Japan Tourism Agency Commissioner Hiroshi Tabata told a press conference on Wednesday details of the scheme were being debated.

One of the options under consideration includes Japan paying half the cost of a tourist’s flight, according to the Japan Times.

It’s not known how long the scheme would last, or whether it would be limited to countries who have also contained COVID-19 outbreaks, such as Australia and New Zealand.

The nation has reported 16,628 coronavirus cases and 851 deaths.

More than 13,000 of those cases have since recovered.

Japan lifted the nation’s state of emergency on Monday, a clear sign things are improving.

Japan has lifted its state of emergency on the last remaining areas hit by coronavirus, but the economic impact has been harsh. It's pledging an unprecedented $1.86 trillion in stimulus to fight the recession that's now taken hold.

Nagano ski resort Nozawa Onsen is one tourist destination hoping for the plan to become reality.

It announced the news of the scheme on its Facebook page on Tuesday.

“Like many countries, (Japan) has taken a major hit with (tourism) numbers dropping by 99.9 per cent from April 2019 to April 2020,” the post reads.

“To counteract this and get Japan loved again the government has announced it is putting together a scheme - it could cover half your travel expenses on a trip to Japan.”

“Details are still being finalised but with the 2021 Tokyo Olympics planned for next summer, officials are keen to get the ball rolling as soon as possible once all well to do so.”

The island of Sicily announced a similar scheme last month.

It plans to pay half the airline ticket and three night’s accommodation for any tourist who wants to visit.
